Elk Grove Unified School District is an award-winning district, known for its commitment to academic excellence and learning for all students. The district covers 320 square miles. It has 64 schools within the City of Elk Grove, the City of Sacramento, the City of Rancho Cordova and the unincorporated area of Sacramento County. The district serves more than 62,000 students. Of those, more than 10,000 speak 72 different languages. The district’s rich history reaches beyond unification and into the 19th century. The elementary school district known as “Elk Grove” was formed in 1866 and is one of the oldest in the state of California. The Elk Grove Union High School District followed almost 30 years later opening in 1893. The unification of the Elk Grove district took place in 1959 under the leadership of County Superintendent T.R. Smedberg, a former superintendent of Elk Grove Union High School District. Unification took place through a public vote. The vote was close. Of the 1,154 ballots, 589 voted yes, defeating the no’s by 24 votes. The elementary districts that unified with the high school district included: Elk Grove, Sierra-Enterprise, Franklin, Cosumnes River, Dillard, Florin, and Pleasant Grove.
