Earth Day / Creek Week April 2006

In April 2006, Calvine High School students participated in Earth Day Creek Week activities. On the first day, students familiarized themselves with different local watersheds. On day 2, Calvine students worked at Strawberry Creek, gridding and cataloguing all flora and fauna living in their individual grids. On day 3, students tested the water quality of Strawberry Creek. At the Sacramento County Creek Week Splash off held at Calvine High School, the Sacramento Urban Creek Council recognized Calvine students for their efforts towards learning about and protecting local watersheds. Look below for photos of students engaged in learning at Strawberry Creek. See Calvine Splash.

Calvine High School students participate in service learning by visiting local watersheds and testing water quality.

Water quality data.
Students eagerly participate in water quality testing as they know the water they test is the same that they use in their personal lives.
The importance of volunteering is to help our local community while learning about the environment. Calvine High School students have a rich history of helping out during community projects.
Students calculate water quality information.
Students walk to Strawberry Creek to participate in environmental lessons. Students and teachers collaborating outside of the normal classroom environment gives a real world feel to studying the environment.
Watersheds in the Calvine High School community provide a valuable place for animals to live in a natural habitat. Students analyze this habitat to see how the effects of humans living nearby affect their environment.
