The focus of the COHS PE Department is to teach students how to maintain a
healthy lifestyle. Students will be introduced to a variety of physical fitness
activities, learn about proper nutrition, sleep and the importance of maintaining
balance in life. Each student is required to complete two years or 20 credits of
Physical Education (the equivalent of four block classes). Students will
automatically be enrolled in Physical Education their freshman and sophomore year.

The Physical Education Program will be divided into two core classes and a variety
of electives. The ninth grade core class will emphasize personal fitness & wellness,
individual activities & sports, water safety, and self defense. The tenth grade core
class will continue to emphasize personal fitness & wellness, help students
development of a fitness plan, participate in team activities & sports, dance, and
tumbling. The PE elective courses will include Beginning Weight Training, Advanced
Weight Training, Personal Fitness/Wellness, Team Sports (Volleyball, Basketball,
Flag Football), Net Sports (Tennis, Badminton, Speedmitten, Pickleball, Ping Pong).

The Physical Education Department will use a new and innovative program called
Hop Sports to help students improve their fitness level while having fun (see link to
Hop Sports for more information). Students will also monitor their heart rate to
determine their fitness level and set goals to improve their current fitness level. All
physical education students will work in the COHS Fitness Room which includes
spinner bikes, med balls, jump ropes, weight training machines, plyo balls, and core
stations. They will work with the instructor to incorporate a fitness program that
specifically works toward improving their overall level of fitness.

One of the primary goals of the Cosumnes Oaks PE Department is to create a
positive & fun learning environment where all students have the opportunity to be
successful. The PE Staff will create a dynamic and innovative program where
students look forward to coming to class. Students will leave the COHS PE program
with acknowledge about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and how
to incorporate a fitness plan. Additionally, students will have basic knowledge of a
variety of sports skills. We believe fitness can be fun once you identify what you
enjoy doing and to assist students in this identification process.
