Superintendent's Message

Springtime in Elk Grove Unified means plays, standardized testing, spring athletics, open houses and studying for finals as the end of the school year approaches.

At the district level, our focus remains centered on weathering tough budgetary times – keeping as many people and programs in place as possible.  EGUSD staff has spent countless hours understanding and preparing for what seems to be an ever-changing state budget.  This work will be ongoing as the May special election and the Governor’s revise in June may affect the state funding of public education.

I commend the staff and students of Elk Grove Unified for maintaining their focus on academics during these months of economic upheaval.  Our staff is committed to knowing each and every EGUSD student by name and by need in our efforts to eliminate the achievement gap.  Our goal continues to be preparing all students for college and careers.  At EGUSD we offer students a number of choices to help prepare them for their future.  We have rigorous high school courses that align with the California State University or University of California A-G requirements for entrance.   We also offer a number of Career Technical Education classes that prepare our students for college and a global workforce.

While many districts are eliminating or significantly reducing summer school, EGUSD remains committed to supporting our students through the summer months within the budget allocated by the state.  This summer, the district will offer a scaled-down summer school at all secondary schools and some elementary schools.  For information on the district’s summer school program, click here.

At Elk Grove Unified, we understand that safe learning environments are critical to optimum academic performance.  The safety of our students both on campus and to and from school is a top priority of our district.  Parents can help in our efforts by talking to their students about making safe decisions.   The Elk Grove Unified School District uses the motto, “If you see, something or know something, say something.”  Students should report any suspicious activity to an adult.   The district also uses a 24-hour anonymous tipline, We Tip, 1-800-78-CRIME.

As the year winds down we continue to celebrate our 50 years of history with a number of programs. On April 14, we will show our last segment of a five part documentary of the district’s history.  The last segment focuses on our district’s graduates.  On April 18 we will have a Student Talent Showcase at the Cosumnes Oaks High School’s Performing Arts Center.   On May 2, high school marching bands from across the district will come together in a districtwide band to perform in the Western Festival Parade.  Our final event for the year will be a Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on June 9 at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center.   I hope you can join us in our celebrations.

I look forward to seeing you at one of the many end of the year events offered at Elk Grove schools.

Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D.
