Technology
is an important teaching tool that is used daily by our teachers.
The use of technology in the classroom enhances the learning
opportunities of students by providing new and exciting material.
Computer
systems are used extensively by teachers, other staff, and
students at John Ehrhardt in the following ways: Report cards,
student information, Word Processing, and Internet research
Using
the computer to learn typing skills and to perform word processing
is a big application of computer use at John Ehrhadt. Typing
is like reading. Once a student can type, it opens new worlds
for them to explore. Staff and students use word processors
to type lessons, reports, letters, assignments, and many other
documents.
Classroom
Management - Most teachers use electronic grade book programs
which make determining a students current grade easy and quick.
Teachers also use special programs to design assignments like
custom word search and crossword puzzles.
Electronic
Research - The new library system on our PC's is cutting edge.
Staff and students take advantage of the vast research capabilities
at John Ehrhardt by using multimedia reference CD-ROMs on
various topics, electronic encyclopedias, and the World Wide
Web. Teachers are provided with numerous web sites that contain
vast educational resources.
Subject-Specific Software - Teachers and students use a wide
variety of educational software, taking advantages of the
multimedia capabilities of the computer. Computer-based instruction
allows for more individualized learning as the students can
progress at his/her own pace and control the learning process.
Some software is used to introduce new content, while others
are used to practice and reinforce acquired skills.
Electronic
Presentations - Some teachers are beginning to abandon chalk
boards and overhead transparencies to display subject information
during lessons, and some are using presentation software such
as Microsoft Power Point to produce detailed, illustrated
"slide shows" on the computer which present the
subject information in full color, sometimes with animation
or sound added. The ability to display what is on the teacher's
computer onto their classroom TV allows the teacher the ability
to introduce new computer-based material to the students.
In some classes, students produce their own electronic presentations
as part of a group oral report for a project.
Simulations
- Simulation programs allow the students to imitate some sort
of complex environment and control it on the computer to better
understand the relationships within the environment. Whether
the student is simulating a trip down the Oregon Trail or
navigating truck deliveries from one state to state, simulations
give the student a feel for something that they would otherwise
never experience.
Electronic
Mail - Using the district's Microsoft Exchange e-mail system,
teachers can easily communicate with other teachers and employees
throughout the district as well as parents and students. Teachers
can share ideas as well as exchange computer files of valuable
lessons and student activities.
Graphics
- Graphic (drawing and painting) programs are used to design
and produce student worksheets, signs, seating charts, illustrations,
transparencies, maps, and many other items. Students use a
variety of drawing/illustration programs to enhance learning
activities such as Kid Pix 2, Storybook Weaver, Appleworks
draw tools, Word draw tools, etc.
Spreadsheet
- Spreadsheet programs let you keep track of numerical information.
We use it to keep track of budgets, compile survey results,
etc. 3rd through 6th grade students learn how to design and
work with spreadsheets in Appleworks 6 and Excel to help facilitate
mathematic concepts and understanding of formulas.
