The School of Media Communications, part of Franklin High School’s STEM Academy, is a cumulative four-year program committed to providing industry standard training and post-secondary opportunities to students in the field of digital video production.

Students admitted to the School of Media Communications will complete four courses in digital technology that include state-of-the-art training on Macintosh digital editing stations, television production in an on-campus television studio, collaborative production work with peers and staff at Franklin High School, and opportunity for internships at media facilities within the greater Sacramento area. Completion of the Media Communications curriculum at Franklin High School can lead students to post-graduation employment or further study in digital media at the community college or university level.

The School of Media Communications consists of a team of core academic and specialty teachers who will share students throughout the four-year program. This team will ensure students are provided with core academic curricula that both supports and enhances the Media Communications curriculum.

Students making a commitment to the program will complete a sequential series of courses encompassing all areas of digital video and digital television production. Interwoven within the courses will be opportunities for students to participate in news journalism and documentary production assignments at Franklin High School and the adjoining Toby Johnson Middle School. In addition, students’ training will move beyond the campus as they provide media work for other schools within the Elk Grove Unified School District, as well as for business and other community partners within the area of Elk Grove.

  • Touring local public and private television studios in the Sacramento area
  • Creation of broadcast programs to be aired on public access television stations
  • Development of informational videos for local schools, EGUSD, and television and private industry in the Sacramento area.

Many opportunities will exist for students in the
School of Media Communications to promote their abilities and to provide exposure to media opportunities outside of the campus. These opportunities include involvement with:

  • KVIE Channel 6, Sacramento – Public Television
  • Tower of Youth “Teen Digital Reel Showcase”
