codec compression-decompression

A codec is a mathematical formula that analyzes the data in a file and determines how data can be removed while still maintaining an acceptable file quality. By removing data, the file becomes much smaller (i.e., compressed). The dropped data is replaced by the formula so that on the playback side it can be recreated (i.e., decompressed). Codecs are used in digital photography, video and music files. 

 

.gif Graphic Interchange Format.

Graphic Image File format, a widely supported image-storage format promoted by CompuServe that gained early widespread use on online services and the Internet. Limited to 256 colors

 

.jpg Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPEG is a standardized image compression mechanism. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the original name of the committee that wrote the standard. JPEG is designed for compressing either full-color or gray-scale images.

 

.mov QuickTime movie file

A method of storing sound, graphics, and movie files developed by Apple Computer. The latest version of QuickTime can be downloaded from Apple's website and played on Windows computers. 

 

.wmv Windows Media Video

Windows Media Video, this refers to Microsoft's family of video codecs.  These files cannot be imported into a Mac video editor. 

 

.flv Flash Video

The Flash video format is the most common video format for the web.  FLV files are used on such web sites at YouTube. 

 

.avi Audio Video Interleaved

developed by Microsoft, these files can be imported into Mac editing systems.

 

.aif Audio Interchange File.  A digital audio file format from Apple that is used on the Macintosh. It is used for music and other sound files.
