Screaming fans, red carpets, limousines, stars, award shows and tobacco? What does tobacco have to do with glamour and movies? Our youth stars from the Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! Program educated the world last night as they handed out the Hackademy Awards, "honoring" the films and actors that portrayed tobacco well and not so well in 2007. If you were one of the more than 200 guests and "paparazzi" in attendance last night, you learned that in 2007: * Half of the movies with tobacco were rated for viewing
by young people; We need your help to reverse these numbers. You may be asking, why is this important? Research from Dartmouth has shown that 40 percent of the youth who use tobacco products do so because of exposure to smoking in movies. That means that in the USA alone, more than 1000 young people will try their first cigarette today because of what they saw on a movie screen. Clearly we have more work to do and we need your help. Please make a donation today to Breathe California so we can continue this important work to protect the health of our children. Our Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! youth reviewers work tirelessly all year long to collect that data to illustrate the problem and work for change. And they really could use your help. Please show these amazing youth volunteers that you support their work by making a donation today. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Sincerely, Hacks 1 Roni Abacherli
