The Spelling Bee winner and runner-up represent Kerr at the Sacramento County pre-qualifying Bee in January attempting to qualify for the oral phase of the California Central Valley Spelling Bee. Top spellers in grades 3 through 8 who attend schools in Sacramento, Colusa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Solano, Sutter, Yuba, and Yolo counties compete at the Central Valley Spelling Bee held in March at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Sacramento. The competition begins at 10am and finishes in the early afternoon. The winner of this Bee represents the California Central Valley at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
