Royal Reader Contest

Librarians, Ms. Winter and Ms. Mulligan

The incredible Royal Reader contest lasts for about 6 weeks and ended on March 25. In this small amount of time students had the opportunity to read up to nine books, a goal that many reached. For this contest to take place Librarians around the country over the past year read an amazing 300-400 books to determine which would be included in the contest (that's more than one book a day)! They selected the best 12 works at four age levels for kids to read. The age levels were primary, intermediate, middle school, and high school. Our students read the intermediate through high school books.

Students at Kerr had a chance to determine the top books among the twelve. When they completed a minimum of six of the books they were allowed to vote on their top choices. The students who read at least seven books also got a gift certificate from Borders Book Stores. Eight books earned them a larger gift certificate while readers of all nine received the top gift certificate. All Kerr students who completed at least two books were invited to a scrumptious breakfast.

The most popular 2004 Royal Reader Contest Winning Books at Kerr were:

Love That Dog

The School Story (#1 in choice in state)

The Kite Fighters

The other six titles in the contest were:

Flipped (#2 state choice)

Fever 1793

Ties That Bind, Ties That Break (#3 state choice)

No More Dead Dogs

Razzle

175 students participated in the Royal Reader Contest this year. The 140 students who read at least two of the eight books were invited to the Royal Reader breakfast on April 1. Twenty-eight students read all eight titles as of March 19. The 175 students read a combined 95,358 pages!

Please congratulate students who demonstrate a commitment to reading. Who knows, their choices may become bestsellers. Ask them which their favorite books were.
