Physical Science is a year long course designed to prepare the student for high school science courses. The scientific areas focused upon are in the Physical and Earth Sciences and are titled: Oceans and Climates; Machines; Work and Energy; Sound and Light; Electricity and Magnetism; Energy Transformations; Atomic Theory; and Particles and Solutions. There is also a mini unit on Drug Education and a month long Computer Unit on the use of spreadsheets in the sciences. Our program emphasizes lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities using the Science Plus textbook series in addition to various other texts in class. |

Honors Science is a course for high achieving 8th grade students. This is a year long course designed to prepare the student for accelerated high school science courses. It introduces the student to, and gives the student practice in, the applications of mathematics in science and in independent research. Scientific areas in the Physical and Earth Sciences are emphasized with special attention given to Physics and Chemistry. Individual topics include: Atomic Theory; Kinetic Molecular Theory; Chemical Energy Transformations; Physical Changes and Chemical Reactions; Solutions; Geologic Processes; and, Weather. Drug Education is also a part of the eighth grade honors science curriculum as well as a short unit on Sexual Harassment in the Fall. An independent research paper will be a part of the fourth quarter requirements. While this course will not be using an assigned textbook, readings will be distributed periodically and will be used inside and outside of class. |
