Bus Service

The Elk Grove Unified School District offers a limited program for bus service for eligible students. Most of the district’s bus service is provided for a fee.  Some students are exempt from this fee including students on low income or foster status, special education students who have an individual education program that provides for transportation services and students who are offloaded.

Students are required to show the driver a valid pass to ride the bus. To obtain a pass, parents or guardians must complete an application that can be downloaded below. Return the application to the district’s Transportation Department. Falsification of information is cause for revocation of bus pass and bus riding privileges. Families will not be charged for more than three children. Fees and service areas will be reviewed annually.

Bus passes identify students and their appropriate bus stops, and must be carried at all timesStudents are required to show their transportation pass daily when boarding the bus. Single ride ticket booklets are available for those students who need to ride the bus intermittently on a space-available basis.

Should a pass be lost, stolen or damaged, contact or visit the Transportation Department immediately to obtain a replacement.  Payment of a $15 service charge is required for a replacement pass.

Helpful Tips at the Bus Stop

  • Have your bus pass ready to show the drive upon boarding the bus.
  • If something drops near the bus, ask the driver for help.  NEVER stoop down or go under the bus to retrieve items.
  • Destruction of property, playing in or running across the street, or other horseplay at a bus stop is dangerous and prohibited.
  • Do not bring pets to a bus stop.
  • Large school projects, large band instruments, scooters, or skateboards cannot be transported on the bus unless contained in a backpack.
  • For the safety of your student, advanced written permission is required for a student to exit the bus at any bus stop other than their assigned stop.  The request must be in writing and signed by the parent, and approved by your school site administrator or designee.

You Can Help Us with Traffic
By following the school’s directions, parents and guardians can help provide a smooth flow of traffic at our schools during the morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times. Please use appropriate pickup and drop-off areas, follow the directions of school staff, and follow traffic laws around school.

Vehicles that are double-parked, stopped in crosswalks, or parked in restricted zones – such as those for loading and unloading school buses – create unsafe conditions for students, parents and motorists. These conditions make it difficult for children and other motorists to see each other, which can lead to accidents and injuries. It is better to wait a few seconds for a more secure drop-off or pickup location than to stop where children need to dart across busy streets, or to hold up traffic while picking up or dropping off students in the street.

The traffic situations you experience at your child’s school are also part of the day-to-day problem our school bus drivers deal with every day while charged with the safe travel of their riders. In addition to normal school traffic, bus drivers also encounter other hazardous parental behavior that can cause accidents. For example, please do not block the path of a school bus with your vehicle or drive alongside the bus trying to get the driver’s attention.

Children can be safety picked up and dropped at school and bus stops, but they need your help. Parents should always comply with speed limits, parking signs, and traffic direction. With your help, we can all travel in and around our schools safely.
