EGUSD high schools gear up for spring theater season

February 21, 2008

Dim the lights and open the curtain – it is spring theater season once again at Elk Grove Unified!  The following schools are presenting productions in the months of February through April:

February 28-March 8:  Elk Grove High School’s Theater Department presents “The Apple Tree,” an evening of three one-act musicals about men, women and the issue of temptation.  The first musical, “The Diary of Adam and Eve,” is a spin on the tale of the world’s first couple, adapted from Mark Twain’s “Extracts From Adam’s Diary.”  The second musical, “The Lady or the Tiger?” explores the fickleness of love in a rock and roll fable set in a mythical barbarian kingdom.  The third and final musical, “Passionella,” is based on Julius Feiffer’s off-beat Cinderella story about a chimney sweep whose dreams of becoming a glamorous movie star nearly sabotage her one chance for true love.  All shows begin at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee showing on March 8 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $8 general admission and $6 for children 12 and under, senior citizens 65 and over and SARTA members.  Children 3 and under are free.  For more information, misschunster@gmail.com or call (916) 686-7741.

March 6-8 & 13-15:  The Theater Association at Franklin High School proudly presents “The Boy Friend,” a musical originally produced in London in the 1950’s.  The musical, set in Madame Dubonnet’s School for Young Ladies – The Villa Caprice – in the 1920’s, “The Boy Friend” follows the romantic exploits of a group of young British girls and some visiting American, French and British suitors.  Thursday night shows start at 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday night shows begin at 7:30 p.m. A matinee showing will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.  Tickets are $8 and $10 and are available at Franklin High School (6400 Whitelock Parkway, Elk Grove, CA 95757), by calling (916) 714-8150 or online at www.franklintheatreassociation.com.

April 3-5 & 11-12:  The Theater Department at Laguna Creek High School presents “Bye Bye Birdie,” the musical story of a rock and roll star who is leaving to join the army.  The star will give one lucky girl “one last kiss” before leaving for the army.  All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $8 per person.  For more information, please call (916) 683-1339.

April 18-19 & 24-26:  Sheldon High School’s  Performing Arts Department will present “Once Upon A Mattress,” a musical, quirky take on the fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.”  The story centers around Prince Dauntless the Drab, whose mother – Queen Aggravain – seeks to keep the boy to herself and proclaims he will only wed a true princess of royal blood.  When Princess Winnifred arrives, the queen devises a clever test to determine if Winnifred is worthy of marrying her son.  All shows begin at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee showing on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m.  Ticket prices are $10 general admission.  For ticket reservations and additional information, call (916) 681-7500 x8109.

April 24-26 & May 1-3:  Pleasant Grove High School’s drama students present the classic 50’s musical “Grease!”  Come see Danny, Sandy, Rizzo and the rest of their crew as they experience the last year of high school.  All shows start at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $9 or $8 with a PGHS ASB card.  For more information, contact Renee Fritz at (916) 686-0230.

May 2-3 & 8-10:  Monterey Trail High School will present “Seussical: The Musical.”  This musical extravaganza will feature students from Monterey Trail, Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School and area elementary schools.  The public is invited to come join their favorite Dr. Seuss characters – including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and the Whos of Whoville – on a fun, musical adventure.  All shows start at 7 p.m., with the exception of a performance at 4 p.m. on May 8.  Tickets are $8 for students, senior citizens and children and $10 for general admission.  For more information, call (916) 688-0050.
