Senior, disabled citizens can apply for special Measure A tax reduction from April 15 – June 30 April 14, 2008 Between April 15 and June 30, senior citizens age 65 or older and disabled people living within the Elk Grove Unified School District, and having no school-age children living in the home, may apply for a 70 percent reduction in their Measure A assessment, a local property tax that funds school improvement. Under 1987’s Measure A, people who live in home built before 1987 pay $45.84 a year, but with the reduction, they would pay $13.75. Residents whose homes were built between January 26, 1987 and June 30, 1998, pay $117.84 annually, but with the reduction they would pay $35.35. The lower rates also apply to apartments and mobile homes. Measure A – 1987 helped improve every school in the district, including new multipurpose rooms, science labs, libraries, and playground equipment. The 1987 bond also accounted for seven percent of the cost to build new schools, while the 1998 bond contributes approximately 19 percent to the cost of building new schools. The balance comes from state funds and developer fees. The Measure A that voters approved in March 1998 retains the 70 percent discount for seniors and disabled people on future housing assessed at $180 or $200 per year. This 1998 assessment will help pay for improvements at every school including technology and safety measures, as well as modernization at schools over 25 years old. To receive the discount, qualified people apply directly with the school district. Landlords must pass the tax savings on to renters who receive the reduction. People who qualify for the tax reduction must reapply each year, which can be done by phone, mail, or in person. The reduction will not be given without a current application or renewal. To receive an application or for more information, call the district’s Facilities and Planning Department at 686-7562, or write Marcia Grambusch at EGUSD Facilities, 9510 Elk Grove-Florin Road, Room 206, Elk Grove, CA 95624, or email schooltax@egusd.net. The Elk Grove Unified School District covers 320 square miles – about one third of Sacramento County. The school district serves the communities of Elk Grove, Florin, Franklin, Laguna, Laguna West, Rancho Murieta, Sloughhouse, Vineyard, Wilton, and portions of the cities of Sacramento and Rancho Cordova.
