What's Happening - Calendar of Events – September 14-19 September 14, 2009 Here is what’s going on in the Elk Grove Unified School District during the week of September 14-19: September 15: Students from Elk Grove Elementary School will participate in the grand opening celebration of the new Laguna Creek Trail Bridge at 10 a.m. The new bike/pedestrian bridge serves as a safe route to school for students from Elk Grove Elementary School and Joseph Kerr Middle School and provides easier access to Hill Park by connecting surrounding neighborhoods. September 16: Students at Toby Johnson Middle School will attend a motivational assembly 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Tyler Durman, author of the book “Bite-Sized Wisdom for Parents,” will be the keynote speaker. September 18: Valley High School will host a National GEAR UP Day celebration where State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell will be honored for his commitment to education from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The celebration will also include a tour of GEAR UP programs at Valley along with a discussion of Valley’s “best practices” in closing the achievement gap and lowering the drop-out rate. September 19: Monterey Trail High School will host the annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Recruitment Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The fair provides an opportunity for EGUSD high school students to participate in the college information and admissions process. Highlights include “on the spot” admissions to qualified seniors, personal advising on undergraduate education for both students and parents and assistance with identifying financial resources and beginning the financial aid and scholarship process. This event is co-sponsored by the United College Action Network. September 19: Elk Grove High School will host an E-Waste Recycling event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in their school parking lot. Items accepted include monitors, televisions, desktop and notebook PCs, VCRs, stereo equipment, speakers, keyboards, mice, PDAs, digital cameras, ZIP drives, telephones, cell phones, printers, copiers, scanners and fax machines. September 19: Prairie Elementary School will host the 4th Annual Valley Hi Youth and Adult Coalition Family Fun Day and Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Valley Hi community members are invited to spend the day participating in fun, family-centered activities and receive valuable health information and resources. This free event will include vision screening, blood pressure and dental checks, as well as a variety of community-based informational booths. Parents will be able to register their children for preschool and kindergarten. In addition to these activities, there will be entertainment, face painting, crafts and prizes. New this year is the Farm Stand, which will provide low cost fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers. The first 300 visitors to the event will receive a free lunch.
