EGUSD Schools Continue to Make Gains on API Scores September 22, 2009 On Tuesday, September 15 the California Department of Education released the 2008-09 Accountability Progress Report (APR), which provides results for the Academic Performance Index (API), Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and Program Improvement (PI). EGUSD schools continued to shine on the API. The district’s API score grew by 12 points to 786. All of EGUSD’s subgroups showed growth except for the Pacific Islander subgroup. Thirty-four EGUSD schools achieved schoolwide growth APIs above the state’s target of 800, compared to 29 in 2008, 27 in 2007, 24 schools in 2006, and 18 in 2005. Elitha Donner showed the largest elementary schoolwide gain of 47 points. Samuel Jackman showed the largest middle school schoolwide gain at 23 points. Sheldon showed the largest high school gain at 26 points. Transitions showed the largest alternative/continuation school gain at 67 points. Based on 2008-2009 test scores the Elk Grove Unified School District is now in Year 1 of Program Improvement under the federal accountability program. EGUSD met 41 of 46 AYP criteria. The district did not meet AYP proficiency targets in English Language Arts for African American, English Language Learner, and Students with Disabilities subgroups. EGUSD also did not meet AYP targets for math for African American and Students with Disabilities subgroups. In addition, EGUSD has six Title I schools in Year 1 of Program Improvement: Anna Kirchgater, Charles Mack, David Reese, Herman Leimbach, Prairie and Samuel Kennedy. While all schools are included in the annual AYP report, sanctions are only applicable to the district and Title I schools if the AYP targets are not met. Federal requirements for district PI status include informing parents, setting aside 10 percent of funds for high-quality professional development, and revising and implementing the LEA plan. Schools in Program Improvement must inform parents of the status, revise and implement a different school plan and provide mandatory Public School Choice. Public School Choice allows parents the opportunity to send their child to a school, identified by the district, that is not in Program Improvement. EGUSD has identified Robert J. Fite and Helen Carr Castello elementary schools as the Public School Choice options for the six schools in Program Improvement.
