Nutrition Olympics comes to David Reese Elementary School

September 24, 2009

The Apple Toss.  A Strawberry Relay.  The Carrot Hop.   The Hoop Challenge.  These are just a few of the events that over 300 fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students at David Reese Elementary School will participate in during the Nutrition Olympics from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2009.

This exciting educational event combines physical activity and nutrition together to encourage students to eat more fruits and vegetables and to exercise 60 minutes a day for better health.

“The Nutrition Olympics are a fun way for students to be physically active while learning about making healthy food choices,” said Anne Gaffney, R.D., Nutrition Specialist in Elk Grove Unified School District’s Food and Nutrition Services.  “All of the games are tied to a fruit or vegetable and nutrition information is provided.”

The event highlights the serious health consequences of poor diet and sedentary lifestyle, and encourages children to make healthy food choices and to be physically active.  The Nutrition Olympics is sponsored by EGUSD Food and Nutrition Services, in collaboration with Health Education Council’s PowerPlay!, Network for a Healthy California, and David Reese Elementary School.
