What's Happening - Calendar of Events – October 5-9 October 5, 2009 Here is what’s going on in the Elk Grove Unified School District during the week of October 5-9: October 6: The 17th Annual EGUSD College & Career Fair will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Valley High School. The event features over 100 representatives from colleges, businesses and all military branches. The fair provides an opportunity for all students and parents from throughout EGUSD to increase their breadth of knowledge in exploring the college enrollment process. October 7: Today is International Walk to School Day. All Elk Grove Unified elementary schools will recognize the day with a variety of activities. Schools will form “walking school buses” to “pick-up” students on their way to school, hold health fairs, have class participation competitions and raffles for prizes, offer healthy snacks and stickers to students who walk or ride bikes or skateboards to school and partner with high schools to assist in Walk to School Day activities. Schools in rural areas will also participate in Walk to School Day festivities by walking their tracks or blacktop areas during recess and participating in class discussions about making safe and healthy choices when walking or riding their bikes. October 8: Students from four EGUSD high schools – Elk Grove, Franklin, Laguna Creek and Pleasant Grove – will compete in a drumline competition at the grand opening celebration at the new Sam’s Club located at Calvine Road and Power Inn Road at 6:30 p.m. The first place winner will receive $1,000, second place will earn $500 and third place will take home $250. October 8: The first of four community budget informational meetings will be held at Valley High School in the library from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. These meetings will provide parents, staff, students and the community an opportunity to hear information and ask questions about the district’s budget cuts. October 9: Harriet Eddy Middle School will host their Parents On Campus Day. Parents will attend a music show performed by Eddy’s Jazz Band and attend class with their student.
