EGUSD students to participate in Salvation Army’s Socktoberfest October 8, 2009 Throughout the month of October, students at seven Elk Grove Unified elementary schools – Arthur C. Butler, Foulks Ranch, Edna Batey, Stone Lake, Helen Carr Castello, Elk Grove and Barbara Comstock Morse – will collect socks to donate to the Salvation Army’s first-ever Socktoberfest. During Socktoberfest, students will collect socks to help supplement clothing donations distributed by the Salvation Army. Sock bins will be placed at each of the schools until Friday, October 23. At the end of the month, the schools will gather the socks collected from all participating Elk Grove Unified schools at a celebration on Saturday, October 24 – National Make A Difference Day – from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “New socks are some of the most needed – and least often donated – clothing items,” said William Utile, a fifth grade teacher at Butler and the chairperson of Elk Grove Unified’s collection. “Homeless shelters, family assistance agencies and rehabilitation facilities have to spend their program money to provide socks. Socktoberfest is a perfect way to collect these much needed items and expose students to the importance of community service.” The schools that are participating in Socktoberfest are using the donation drive as a service learning project for their students. In addition to collecting socks, service learning teachers created curriculum for elementary school students, featuring Sock Sally, the sock puppet. Lessons cover mathematics, poetry and reading. "We are honored to have the students of the Elk Grove Unified School District participate in our first Socktoberfest," said David Bentley, Salvation Army Sacramento County coordinator. "The donated items will go a long way to assist so many families in need in the Sacramento region." Socks can also be purchased online for donation to Socktoberfest.
