Fantasy football creates star players in mathematics at C.W. Dillard Elementary School

October 12, 2009

With the addition of the Fantasy Sports and Mathematics program, fifth and sixth grade students at C.W. Dillard Elementary School are discovering that football can make math fun.

Maryann Evans, a fifth grade teacher at Dillard, started the Fantasy Football Math Club a month ago.  Currently, approximately 25 students – both boys and girls – participate in the club.

“We are only in the fourth week of the season, but all of my students are so eager to work on their Fantasy Football Math teams,” said Evans.  “I have seen students that have struggled in math or were not excited about math now become really excited to talk about math.  I definitely think this program will help increase math scores as the year goes on.”

Students meet every Tuesday to check statistics on their fantasy teams and record their player scores.  They also work on math problems.  Periodically, students are awarded prizes for having the most points.  Evans is also working on putting together a trip to a 49ers game.

The Fantasy Sports and Mathematics program links with California Mathematics Content Standards in number sense, Algebra and functions, measurement and geometry, statistics, data analysis and probability, and mathematical reasoning.
