EGUSD to participate in the Great California ShakeOut October 14, 2009 Shake, rattle and roll! The Elk Grove Unified School District will participate in the Great California ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake drill, at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2009. “The purpose of the Great California ShakeOut is to practice how to protect ourselves during an earthquake and to become prepared at work, school and home,” said Jennifer McCain, coordinator of Elk Grove Unified’s drill. “The recent earthquakes in Samoa and Indonesia are two examples of incidents that remind us that earthquakes happen without warning and we must be prepared in the event of an occurrence. The Great California ShakeOut is the perfect opportunity to rehearse for an event like this across the district and throughout the state.” More than 6 million Californians will participate in the Great California ShakeOut, the largest drill of its kind. In preparation for the ShakeOut, Elk Grove Unified teachers will be practicing the proper techniques with their students throughout the week. At precisely 10:15 a.m. on October 15, students and staff throughout the district will “drop, cover and hold on” for approximately one minute. After the drill, students and staff will practice evacuating buildings on their campuses. For more information on the Great California ShakeOut, visit www.shakeout.org.
