June 20, 2012 Prairie Elementary School has been selected by California First Lady Anne Brown to receive 500 new books through the 6th Annual Scholastic Summer Challenge. To help students avoid the “summer slide,” 48 Governor’s spouses, along with the Governors of Illinois, Vermont and Arizona, partnered with Scholastic as Reading Ambassadors for the Scholastic Summer Challenge. Each Reading Ambassador selects one school to be the recipient of new books in support of their participating in the Challenge. A total of 25,500 new books will be donated through the Challenge this year. The Scholastic Summer Challenge is a free program dedicated to keeping kids motivated to read every day during the summer months. Reading Ambassadors are an integral part of the program, each having pledged to reinforce the importance of summer reading. The majority of Reading Ambassadors have committed to holding summer reading events at a local school or library in their state. During the Scholastic Summer Challenge, students “Read for the World Record” by logging their minutes online or on the Scholastic Reading Timer smartphone app. The top 20 schools with the most reading minutes logged will be featured in the 2013 edition of the Scholastic Book of World Records.
