Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees sets process to fill Board Member vacancy

July 6, 2012

At the June 19, 2012, Board meeting, the trustees reviewed the options available to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Pollyanna Cooper-LeVangie, the current Trustee Area 4 board member. According to law, the Board can fill a vacancy by either holding a special election or making a provisional appointment, effective until the next regular election. A special election would cost between $400,000 and $800,000. Upon deliberation, the Board determined to fill the vacancy through the provisional appointment process.

Procedures and a timeline have been established to appoint a new Board member in August. The person selected will hold office until the next regularly scheduled election for District board members, which will be November 2014. At this election the position will be on the ballot to elect a person to fill the four-year term of office for Trustee Area 4, December 1, 2014-December 1, 2018.

According to a timeline set by the Board, a new trustee will be selected in August. Applications will be accepted from 8 a.m., July 9, 2012, until 5 p.m., July 25, 2012. Applications should be submitted to President of the Board of Education at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center, 9510 Elk Grove-Florin Road, Elk Grove, CA 95624.

The application must include a resume and no more than a three-page letter outlining their interest for joining the Board and the experiences that highlight what they would bring to the Board as trustee. Two letters of recommendation may be included with the application. Information or questions about the process are available from Arlene Hein, Board administrative assistant, at 686-7700.

A committee of the Board (less than a quorum) will screen the applications from July 26, 2012, to August 2, 2012. At a special meeting on August 16, 2012, the Board will, in open session, interview those applicants who are moved forward for an interview and appoint a trustee. Within 10 days of this provisional appointment notices of the vacancy and the provisional appointment must be posted in at least three public places and published in the local newspaper notifying the voters of the appointment which shall become effective immediately and continue unless a petition calling for a special election pursuant to the Education Code is filed in the Office of the County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of the provisional appointment.
