Winners selected for 4th Annual Superintendent’s Art Contest
On Wednesday, March 18, 24 young and talented artists from middle and high schools throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District were honored at the 4th Annual Superintendent’s Art Contest Reception.
This year’s theme was “Dancing in the Light of Learning – EGUSD Celebrates 50 Years of Education.” There were more than 270 contest entries this year. Winning works of art will be on display in the Superintendent’s office for one year.
“Each year, I am excited to see how many wonderful works of art are submitted to the contest,” said EGUSD superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D. “I’m happy to see that so many artistically gifted students in our district choose to participate in the contest. Art education is an essential part of the overall academic growth of our students. Its wonderful to see the creativity and ingenuity of our youth in action through art.”
Dr. Ladd began the Superintendent’s Art Contest in 2005 during his first year with the district. He created the contest to showcase the artistic gifts of district students in grades 7-12.
On March 2, a panel of Sacramento area community members judged the entries based on: theme; originality and creativity; composition and design; and craftsmanship and skill. The judges this year included: Michael Gill of the City of Elk Grove Committee for the Arts, Jane Breslin of Elk Grove Artists, Sharon Scott of I Made It! Art Studio, Chelsea Hunt of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, Hector Amezcua of the Sacramento Bee and Mark Emerson of California State University, Sacramento.
From all entries in the contest, one entry was awarded the “Best of Show” award. “Best of Show” honors the student with this highest score overall in the contest. This year’s “Best of Show” winner was Nina Beverly Belen, a 12th grade student at Laguna Creek High School. Belen was the first place winner in the Mixed Media category for her piece entitled “Dancing with the Dragons.”
