On Wednesday, March 12, twenty-five young and talented artists from various middle and high schools throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District were honored at the 3rd Annual Superintendent’s Art Contest Reception for their artistic achievements.
This year, the contest theme was “Cultivating Knowledge.” The art contest received 305 pieces of original art this year.
“The entries are a testament to the great artistic talent in our district,” said EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D. “It is wonderful to see the creativity of our youth in action.”
The Superintendent’s Art Contest made its first appearance in 2005, during Dr. Ladd’s first year with the district. The contest was created to showcase the artistic gifts of district students in grades 7-12. All winning works of art will be on display in the Superintendent’s office for one year.
On Monday, February 25, a panel of Sacramento area community members judged the entries based on theme, originality and creativity, composition and design, and craftsmanship and skill. The judges this year included: Michael Gill of the Elk Gove Committee for the Arts, Jane Breslin of Elk Grove Artists, Sharon Scott of I Made It! Art Studio, Chelsea Hunt of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and Helen Villa of Co-Madres Artistas.
The first place winner in each category received a $50 gift certificate to an art store, a ribbon and a certificate. Ribbons and certificates were also presented to second and third place winners.
From all entries in the contest, one entry was awarded the “Best of Show” award. “Best of Show” honors the student with this highest score overall in the contest. This year’s “Best of Show” winner was Alan Lin, a senior at Laguna Creek High School. Lin was the first place winner in the 3-D category for his piece entitled “Tower of Erudition.” Lin also won “Best of Show” honors in the inaugural Superintendent’s Art Contest in 2006.
This year’s winners include:
