Elk Grove Unified School District’s 2008 Employees of the Year

Nine Elk Grove Unified employees were recognized as Employees of the Year on April 23, 2008, for their hard work and commitment to the district.

Members of the Superintendent’s Cabinet surprised the winners at their worksites with recognitions, flowers and balloons.

Dr. Steven M. Ladd, superintendent for Elk Grove Unified, presented employees of the year with a certificate of recognition. All nine employees will be officially recognized and honored by the EGUSD Board of Education at the May 20, 2008 board meeting.

Tina D. Rees, a maintenance locksmith in Maintenance & Operations, was named Classified Employee of the Year. Ms. Rees was hired in 1996 as a custodian in the Food Processing Center. She was promoted to Lead Custodian in 2001. Ms. Rees was named to her current position with the district – maintenance locksmith – in 2001.

Edward L. Diggs, a bus driver with the Transportation Department, was named Classified Employee of the Year. Mr. Diggs began his career with the district as a substitute bus driver in 1998, becoming a full-time bus driver just four days later.

Brynda D. Wilson, an instructional assistant who works with special education students, was also named Classified Employee of the Year. Ms. Wilson has worked for Elk Grove Unified since 2000.

Mary D. Rey, an administrative assistant in Curriculum/Professional Learning, is the Confidential/Supervisory Employee of the Year. Ms. Rey started her time at Elk Grove Unified as an administrative assistant I in Curriculum/Professional Learning in 1996.  She was promoted to administrative assistant II in 1996 and became an administrative assistant III in 2002.

Lynn Bonfond, a school secretary at T.R. Smedberg Middle School, is the Administrative Support Employee of the Year. Ms. Bonfond began her tenure at Elk Grove Unified as a parent liaison at Anna Kirchgater Elementary School in 1989. Over the years, she has held the positions of parent leader, office assistant, state and federal fiscal tech and school secretary at Anna Kirchgater Elementary School before becoming school secretary at Smedberg in 1996.

Janet Anderson, a third grade teacher at Elliott Ranch Elementary School, was named one of two Teachers of the Year. Ms. Anderson began her tenure with the district in 1991 as a first grade teacher at Union House Elementary School. She worked at Union House until 1996 and moved on to Ellen Feickert Elementary School. At Feickert, Ms. Anderson taught second and third grade classes. She moved to Elliott Ranch Elementary School in 2002 where she has taught second and third grade classes.

Maureen F. Messier, a performing arts teacher at Sheldon High School, was also named Teacher of the Year. Ms. Messier has been a member of the Elk Grove Unified family since 1986 when she was a teacher at Valley High School. She taught at Valley until she moved to Sheldon High School when it opened in 1997.

Keven L. MacDonald, principal of T.R. Smedberg Middle School, was named Certificated Administrator of the Year. Mr. MacDonald has been working for Elk Grove Unified since 1993. He started as a fifth grade teacher at Anna Kirchgater Elementary School. Mr. MacDonald moved on to Sheldon High School as social science teacher in 1997 and took on additional responsibility as a Reading Interventions teacher at Sheldon in 1999. In 1999, he became a part-time social science teacher and part-time vice-principal at Smedberg.  Mr. MacDonald became a full-time vice-principal at Smedberg in 2004 and was named principal at Smedberg in 2005.

Annette M. Buckmaster, director of classified personnel in Human Resources, was named Classified Administrator of the Year. Ms. Buckmaster joined Elk Grove Unified in 1995 as a legal compliance specialist. Ms. Buckmaster became director of classified personnel in 1997.
