On August 13 through August 15, middle schools throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District welcomed incoming seventh grade students to their campuses – sans eighth grade students. These new seventh grade students will be attending Jump Start Middle School, a special program at Elk Grove Unified that allows these students to get a taste of what middle school life is like, without the added pressures of the presence of eight graders.
“Jump Start is an excellent program for our incoming seventh grade students,” said Sara Noguchi, Ed.D., director of secondary education for Elk Grove Unified. “This program not only helps ease the anxiety of the new seventh graders, but it also calms parents’ concerns about their child’s safe and successful transition to middle school as well.”

The Jump Start program was first envisioned by L. Steven Winlock, Ed.D., then Associate Superintendent for K-8 Education. The program debuted in 2004 at Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School. The curriculum for Jump Start was written by seventh grade teachers and sixth grade teachers were the facilitators during the program. Originally, students could attend one of four 4-day sessions. Jump Start invited students from five different elementary schools from throughout the district to participate in the pilot program at Harris. Over 800 students attended the first Jump Start program that year.
Due to the success of the program at Harris Middle School in 2004, the program expanded to seven of the eight district middle schools in 2005. The program was facilitated by middle school teachers. The number of students attending the program increased to over 1,800.
Today, students attend the program at the middle school they will attend for the 2008-2009 school year. Over the course of the three-day program, students learn how to navigate their middle school campus by attending three classes daily – math/science, English/social science and advocacy. While in class, students learn strategies to help them achieve success in middle school.
Some middle schools are now also offering a Jump Start program for parents as well. At Katherine L. Albiani Middle School, the parent program orients parents to middle school life. The Parent Coordinators at Albiani present the program to the parents. Topics for the parent program include: general information about the school (school colors, mascot, attendance procedures, traffic, etc.), scheduling information (classes, calendars, upcoming dates, etc.), expectations for the first day of school and the first week of school, parent involvement opportunities and information about the Falcon Fiesta and School Loop.
