New Cosumnes River Elementary School opens

Students, staff, parents and other community members were buzzing with excitement on August 16, 2010 as the ribbon was cut officially opening the doors of the new Cosumnes River Elementary School.

Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education, EGUSD Superintendent Dr. Steven M. Ladd, representatives of the Mosher/Ledbetter family, Cosumnes River Elementary students, staff and parents and other honored guests were all a part of the official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the special occasion.

The opening of the new campus has been a long awaited event for the community.  For almost ten years, Elk Grove Unified has been searching for the perfect site to build a new campus to replace the old one.  The population in the eastern portion of the district is growing and the old campus could no longer accommodate the needs of the students and staff.  The old school also lacked many core facilities seen at other elementary school sites, such as a multipurpose room.  The new campus was designed especially for the location it was built upon and features the first two-story elementary school classroom building in the district.

“The new facility offers space and amenities that simply weren’t options at the old school,” said Cosumnes River Elementary Principal Michael Gulden.  “The technology integrated into the learning spaces around the campus will be an asset to teachers and students in so many ways.  The multi-purpose room will be a wonderful addition not only to our school, because we’ve never had one, but also to the community, which now has a place to hold events and theatrical programs.  I’m very excited for our community, for our staff, and for our students!”

The land for the new campus was bought from the Mosher/Ledbetter family.  The same family also donated the land for the old Cosumnes River Elementary School site, directly adjacent to the new campus.  The old campus will be converted into sports fields for the new school.

In gratitude for the Mosher/Ledbetter family’s generosity, Cosumnes River Elementary has asked that the school library be named the Lester and Faye Ledbetter Library.

“We are truly excited to offer the CRES community, students and staff this wonderful new school,” said Robert Pierce, associate superintendent of facilities and planning for the district.  “It has been a long time coming, but the community now has a school with the facilities and resources necessary for educating students in the 21st century.  This was only possible through the support and patience of the entire community, staff, administration and the governing board of the EGUSD.”
