Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles visit Florin High School

On Thursday, October 23, students at Florin High School had the opportunity to see the future of automotives up close and personal when the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP) brought two hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (FCV) to campus for an educational visit.

“Having these cars on campus provided an excellent way to help reinforce concepts being taught to students in our automotive classes and our science program,” said Mark Cerutti, principal at Florin.  “The hydrogen powered vehicles were on display over the course of the day, which gave a few lucky students the chance to take rides in them.”

Throughout the day, students from automotive, physics and general science classes visited the vehicles and listened to presentations from representatives from CaFCP.  CaFCP brought a Ford Focus and a Chevrolet Equinox.

“It was amazing to see how excited the students got when they were viewing and riding in the cars,” said David Bry, automotive teacher at Florin responsible for bringing the vehicles to the school.  “Not only did the cars serve as a reinforcement tool to support the concepts students are learning in class, they also served as a motivational tool to help students that might be struggling.  Today, students saw technology that may lead to future job opportunities.”

During the presentations, CaFCP representatives offered information on how hydrogen FCVs work, the benefits of FCVs, when FCVs will be available for purchase by the general public and the difference between FCVs and hybrids.

“Essentially, FCVs are electric vehicles,” said Rob Riley, a project manager for CaFCP.  “But, unlike battery-electric cars, FCVs use hydrogen stored on-board the vehicle to generate electricity – meaning they can have a greater driving range.  Hybrids combine two energy sources for supplying driving power.  In fact, many FCVs today are also hybrids, using hydrogen to generate the electricity to power the car and batteries to store excess energy generated from fuel cells or braking.”

Overall, the visit was a hit with students at Florin.

“It’s always great to be able to demonstrate science in action,” said Bry.  “Seeing tangible examples of what they are learning in the classroom is invaluable.  When they see that the exhaust contains only water vapor and heat, they understand the concept of hydrogen and oxygen molecules combining in the fuel cell.  It’s science come to life.”

Formed in 1999, the California Fuel Cell Partnership is a collaboration of 33 organizations that believe fuel cell vehicles powered by hydrogen have the potential to change transportation.  Together, auto manufacturers, government agencies and energy and technology companies all work together to creating new technology that can move the world toward practical and affordable environmental solutions.

Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Vehicle Fun Facts*

  • Fuel cell vehicles are known for their ability to accelerate quickly, are fuel efficient and are mostly silent.
  • The only emissions from these vehicles are heat and water.
  • Any country around the world has the ability to produce hydrogen using a variety of sources and methods.
  • The environmental impact from hydrogen vehicles is next to nothing since hydrogen can be made from renewable sources of energy.
  • Hydrogen fueling stations can produce hydrogen on-site by using a variety of methods.
