EGUSD in the Spotlight
Veterans Day celebrated at Elk Grove Unified
Elk Grove Unified students and staff are commemorating Veterans Day with various ceremonies and activities. On November 8, five veterans from the Vietnam and Iraq wars shared their experiences with students in Kalli Carvalho’s class at T.R. Smedberg Middle School.

“I think it’s important that students today learn about the sacrifices veterans gave for our country,” said Keven MacDonald, principal at Smedberg. “These veterans are a part of history and they are able to make history come alive for our students.”

This is the eighth year veterans have visited Carvalho’s language arts classes at Smedberg. The veterans spoke of their experiences from while they were in the military and after their service ended and answered student questions. Students in Carvalho’s classes also discussed how to honor veterans and will complete an oral history interview with family members or friends who served in the military.

Maeola Beitzel Elementary School recognized our nation’s veterans on November 9 with a special morning ceremony. Their event included a performance by the Beitzel Student Band, an all-school recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, student readings on the history and purpose of Veterans Day and a special bagpipe presentation by Elizabeth Tubbs, director of Beitzel’s Student Band.
Facts about Veterans Day
- The holiday originated at the end of World War I when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied forces and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
- In 1919, November 11 was first recognized as Armistice Day by President Wilson.
- Following World War II, in 1954, November 11th was declared a day to honor American veterans of all wars. The day was renamed Veterans Day.
- Veterans Day is always officially observed on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.
- Veterans Day is a day to thank and honor all who served honorably in the military, either wartime or peacetime. It is intended to be a day to thank living veterans for their service. Memorial Day is observed to remember and honor those in the military who died serving their country, especially those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.
