Winners honored for EGUSD/U.S. Attorney’s Office Internet Safety Video Contest
U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott and the EGUSD Board of Education honored 27 EGUSD students for their work on Internet Safety videos at the December 16, 2008, Board of Education meeting. The students were recognized for their submissions to the Internet Safety Video Contest, a joint effort by EGUSD and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to educate students about the safe use of the Internet.

Elk Grove Unified has been proactive in taking the initiative to be a leader in the state on the importance of Internet safety outreach. The contest is just one component of Elk Grove Unified’s Internet Safety Initiative – a three-pronged approach to educate staff, parents and students about cyber bullying, online predator strategies and other online Internet safety issues. The partnership between Elk Grove Unified and the U.S. Attorney’s office on the Internet Safety Video Contest serves to increase awareness about Internet safety.

The district started their initiative with professional development classes about Internet Safety, Web 2.0 technology and cyber ethics for staff and Internet safety classes for parents. New for 2008, the Internet safety program has been expanded to include information to parents in school newsletters and an Internet Safety blog. The new blog, 2webwatchers (http://2webwatchers.edublogs.org), is co-facilitated by the district’s technology integration and web specialists, Gail Desler and Kathleen Watt.

To participate in the contest, students in grades 4-12 had to create a video that promoted the safe and ethical use of the Internet. Winners were selected at the elementary, middle and high school levels. The winners will be recognized by U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott and EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D. at 7 p.m. during the December 16, 2008 EGUSD Board of Education meeting.
