Nutrition Calculators
Middle/High School Food Standards Calculators
These Food Calculators will determine if a snack meets the food standards for calories, fat, saturated fat, and sugar requirements and if an entrée meets the calories and fat requirements established by California’s legislation (SB 12). This calculator is for use with those "snacks" and “entrees” that are sold outside of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program.
Snacks are generally regarded as supplementing
a meal, such as chips, pretzels, crackers, bars, ice cream,
jerky/dried meat sticks, nuts and seeds. This calculator
cannot be used to calculate entree items; for entrees, please
use the Middle/High School Entrée
Calculator..
Start Here:
Snack items that meet the SB 12 guidelines must also comply with district approved categories. Under federal law each secondary school’s student organization is limited to three categories of food. The following snack foods do not have to meet the fat and saturated fat limits but must be 250 calories or less per serving container. These snack items do not need to be put in the calculator.
- Seeds
- Nuts
- Nut butters (such as peanut butter)
Step 1: Snacks in middle/high school must be 250 calories or less per container. If the number of
calories per container is higher than 250, the food cannot be sold in the
container and the food must be repackaged in a smaller serving
size. |
| Step 2: If you have a snack food
item that is 250 calories per container or less, enter
the nutrition information from the Nutrition Facts label
in the fields below to determine if the item meets the
standards. |

This calculator is for use with those “entrees” that are sold outside of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program such as food items for Food Fair Days that may be conducted four times each year.
Entrees for middle/high school must meet the following standards:
