ACCELERATED READER:

Accelerated Reader is an award-winning computer program that creates excitement about reading in students and gives teachers objective information on how their students are progressing in their reading. This program encourages reading by awarding points to students who have passed Accelerated Reader Quizzes on books they have read. Books are assigned different reading levels and points according to their difficulties, so students can read material that is at their level. Students and classes compete with each other for the top ranks in their grade levels.

VISIT the Accelerated Reader website and take a quiz!

We use Accelerated Reader at Prairie to:
•  Give students (1st - 6th) an opportunity to read and understand grade level text using appropriate comprehension strategies

•  Encourage and reward students for choosing to read

•  Give students an opportunity to set, track, and accomplish reading goals

•  Build student fluency and comprehension skills through increased exposure to recreational reading

•  Allow students to build upon the reading comprehension strategies introduced within the classroom

•  Allow teachers to differentiate reading materials and monitor reading outside of class

•  Build the joy of reading for all students

All classrooms now have Accelerated Reader installed on computers. AR is also installed on each of the computers in the lab. Please join the AR team in making reading a priority at Prairie School . The program is simple. A student picks AR books from the library (or your classroom library). The student reads the book and then takes a comprehension quiz for that book on the computer. If the student receives a passing score, the student is receives points based on the length and complexity of the book. When selecting books, we ask for you to help students pick books that are at an appropriate reading level for each child. Points are cumulative and students will be acknowledged in many ways for accumulating AR points.

AWARDS:
Individual Awards –
Students will have their names added to the MP wall when they reach the following milestones – 10, 25, 50, 75, 150, 250, 500, and 1,000 points. Mr. MacNeill has a limited number of medallions left over (75 and higher). No lanyards are available.
Monday morning announcements will include students who reach these milestones.

Monthly Grade Level Awards-
The class that has the most points each month will receive a treat (popcorn, licorice, etc) during track change week.

Schoolwide Yearlong Awards-
Our schoolwide goal is 15,000 points for the 09-10 school year. We will offer an end-of-the-year Field Day if we reach our goal. Every increment of 1,000 above that goal will result in extra prizes from the admin team.
