A.V.I.D. (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, especially students in the middle capable of completing a college preparatory path:

  • succeed in rigorous curriculum
  • Enter mainstream activities of the school
  • Increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, universities and
  • Become educated and responsible participants/leaders in our society .
AVID Purpose: The purpose of the AVID program is to restructure the teaching methods of an entire school and to open access to the curricula that will ensure four-year college eligibility to all students.

  • AVID focuses on academic success of low achieving students as a SCHOOL WIDE issue and works towards equal access to rigorous courses for all.

The AVID Student Profile:

AVID is designed for students with ACADEMIC Potential with:

  • average to high test scores
  • 2.0 - 3.5 G.P.A.
  • college potential with
  • desired and determination

and meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • first in the family to attend college
  • historically, least served in 4 year colleges
  • low income
  • special circumstances

Where it is and how it works:

The AVID program works within the regular school day and includes an elective class, trained tutors, an AVID teacher, and a site team of teachers, focusing on college preparation, writing, inquiry, and collaboration. AVID serves over 65,000 middle school and high school students at 1,004 schools in 16 states and 13 foreign countries. Within the United States, states implementing AVID as of January 2001 include California, Texas, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, Virginia, Ohio, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Maryland.
