How
Does Arthur C. Butler Elementary Utilize Technology?
Students and staff use computers
in the following ways:
Word Processing – Students at grades
2-6 learn keyboarding skills and perform word processing as
a form of writing. They write reports, letters and various
other types of assignments.
Graphics
- Students use a variety of drawing/illustration programs
to enhance learning activities such as Kid Pix 2, Storybook
Weaver, scanner software, Word draw tools, etc. Staff use
graphic (drawing and painting) programs to design and produce
student worksheets, signs, seating charts, illustrations,
transparencies, maps, and many other items.
Electronic
Research – With parent permission, students
use multimedia reference CD-ROMs on various topics, electronic
encyclopedias, and the World Wide Web. Teachers are provided
with numerous web sites that contain vast educational resources.
Subject-Specific
Software - Computer-based instruction allows for
more individualized learning, as students can progress at
their own pace and control the learning process. Some software
is used to introduce new content, while others are used to
practice and reinforce acquired skills. Our school uses the
Scholastic Reading Counts program to monitor independent reading,
as students take computer-generated tests.
Electronic
Presentations –The ability to display information
from a computer onto the classroom TV or LCD projector allows
the teacher to introduce new computer-based material to the
class. Some teachers use presentation software such as Microsoft
PowerPoint to produce detailed, illustrated "slide shows"
on the computer, sometimes with animation or sound added.
In some cases, students produce their own electronic presentations
as part of a group or individual report or project.
Classroom
Management - Most teachers use electronic grade book
programs to manage grades and print progress reports. Teachers
also use instructional programs to design assignments such
as math practice pages and crossword puzzles. The district
Student Information System (SISWeb) is used to take attendance,
provide relevant information such as English Learner status
and previous test scores, and monitor placement in programs
such as acceleration or Learning Center. Using the district's
Microsoft Exchange e-mail system, all district staff can communicate
with parents, students and each other.
