S.H. COWELL FOUNDATION

The majority of Cowell grants support the induction and in-service professional development of teachers. Our purpose is to help schools develop effective, coherent and responsive instructional programs. It is vital that the plan for the grant project provide sufficient time and expert support for teachers to master new teaching and assessment methods, subject knowledge and ways of working together.

We also fund projects that support students' learning by strengthening connections among schools, families and other agencies in the community, and projects that link classroom lessons to carefully aligned and structured programs beyond the school. It's not unusual for projects to combine two or even all of these elements.

In general, we do not fund direct services to students, such as tutoring or technological interventions; instead, our focus is on the quality of interactions between students and their teachers.

The S.H. Cowell Foundation only funds communities in northern and Central California.

The foundation requests that prospective applicants call and speak with a program officer about their grant idea before writing a proposal. The foundation will invite letters of inquiry and full proposals from those grant seekers whose projects best align with the foundation's interests and initiatives.

Funds: range between $1,000 and $300,000 (based on funding needs and other sources of support)

Application Deadline: accepts calls from grant seekers year-round

Contact: The S.H. Cowell Foundation, 120 Montgomery Street, Suite 2570, San Francisco, CA 94104; (415) 397-0285

GOLDMAN SACHS FOUNDATION

The Goldman Sachs Foundation is a global philanthropic organization funded by The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. The Foundation's mission is to promote excellence and innovation in education and to improve the academic performance and lifelong productivity of young people worldwide.

The Foundation focuses its grantmaking activities in three primary areas:

The foundation is committed to excellence in all projects it supports. Therefore, they only award a VERY SMALL number of large grants, thus providing significant resources for projects and organizations demonstrating exceptional promise, strong leadership, distinguished records of accomplishment, and the clear capacity to expend sizable grants wisely.

Unsolicited applications are rarely successful. Those interested in applying for a grant from the foundation are invited to explain their ideas informally by submitting to the foundation a short letter (of about two pages) describing the program or organization for which a grant is sought, its mission, accomplishments, budget size, and current funding needs. Documentation of results achieved to date is highly desirable . Submission of published program descriptions or brochures also is encouraged. On the basis of this information, staff will determine whether additional materials are required and contact prospective grantees accordingly.

Funds: varies

Application Deadline: accepts Letters of Inquiry year-round

THE STUART FOUNDATION

The Stuart Foundation is committed to schools that serve our neediest students.  And we believe that today's schools must not only help students reach standards for learning but also support their social, emotional, and ethical development.

A growing body of research is confirming what common sense tells us – that educators can make a profound difference in the educational success of their students.   And so we invest in policies and practices to promote a public education system that develops excellent educators and supports them in vibrant schools that educate students well.

We aim to invest strategically so that Foundation resources help accomplish things that could not be accomplished by other means.  We invest in work that has the potential to generate widespread change through:

  • Policy: state and local policy development
  • Demonstration: developing, implementing, and evaluating promising practices to inform and influence wider change
  • Implementation: getting effective reforms and proven models adopted on a meaningful scale
  • Information: data collection, research, evaluation, and communications
  • Connecting and convening: bringing people together to get things done.
