BEN & JERRY'S FOUNDATION
The Ben & Jerry's Foundation
offers competitive grants to not-for-profit, grassroots
organizations throughout the United States which
facilitate progressive social change by addressing
the underlying conditions of societal and environmental
problems. The foundation supports programs and
projects that are examples of creative problem
solving. Projects must lead to societal, institutional,
and/or environmental change, address the root
causes of social or environmental problems, and
lead to new ways of thinking and acting.
NOTE: Public schools are not considered
"grassroots organizations" under the
Ben & Jerry's Foundation's definition. Grassroots
organizations that support public education are
eligible to apply.

These grants are funded through the sales of the state's Whale Tail License Plate, and support programs that teach children and the general public to value and take action to improve the health of the state's marine and costal resources.

CLARENCE E. HELLER CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
The foundation is interested in supporting programs that enhance academic learning opportunities for elementary and secondary school students by improving the professional skills of classroom teachers.
The Foundation specifically supports environmental and arts education opportunities to children and youth;
- by supporting programs for educators and artists to improve and apply their teaching skills in these subjects; and
- by supporting efforts to advance environmental and arts education programs.
The foundation requests that applicants first submit a short letter of inquiry briefly stating the purpose of the project, the background of the sponsoring organization, the project budget, and the requested amount. If interested in the project, the foundation will request a full proposal.
Expect the review process to take several months to complete. Foundation staff may request a meeting with the applicant organization to obtain additional information about the project.

EARTHWATCH
EDUCATION AWARDS PROGRAM
The Earthwatch Institute is seeking
adventuresome and innovative educators interested
in natural and cultural conservation, sustainability,
and lifelong learning to participate in its awards
program. Through this program, educators will
receive expenses to participate in an Earthwatch
Expedition. Expedition trips enable educators
to work alongside leading scientists, conducting
field research they can use to create new curriculum
and lessons for their classrooms. Participants
are required to keep detailed journals, acquire
press coverage about their experience, and compile
reports and materials to share with others. Award
recipients are required to remain with their current
employer for at least one year after the expedition.
Professional development credit or graduate school
credit may be earned.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION GRANTS (EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Children's Health Protection and Environmental Education requests applications for environmental education projects that enhance the public's awareness, knowledge, and skills to help people make informed decisions that affect environmental quality.
All proposals must address at least one of the following education priorities: EE capacity building; educational advancement; community projects; human health and the environment; EE teaching skills; or career development. Funds: Estimated total program funding is $3 million for 90 to 95 awards.

MELINDA
GRAY ARDIA ENVIRONMENTAL FOUNDATION, LTD.
Grants of $1,000 are awarded to
educators to develop or implement environmental
curricula. Our Mission is to support educators in developing environmental curricula that integrate field activities and classroom teaching and that incorporate basic ecological principles and problem solving.
The Foundation prefers to fund teachers at public
schools. Curricula that encourage the integration
of multiple disciplines and that include cooperative
work with multiple school districts will be given
preference.

NATIONAL GARDENING ASSOCIATION
NGA awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. In evaluating grant applicaitons, priority will given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements: educational focus or curricular/program integration; nutrition or plant-to-food connections; enviornmental awareness/education; entrepreneurship; social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team building, community support, or service learning. Applicants must plan to garden with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years.

FISH AND WILDLIFE FOUNDATION
Keystone Initiative Grants: Under our new strategic plan the Foundation seeks to achieve measurable outcomes on a select set of conservation issues through our Keystone Initiatives. Within each of the initial Keystone Initiatives (i.e., Birds, Freshwater Fish, Wildlife & Habitat, Marine & Coastal), the Foundation has established specific funding priorities. Federal, state, and local governments, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations are welcome to apply for matching grants twice annually, in accordance with the Keystone Initiative Grant guidelines.

WAL-MART/SAM'S
CLUB ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION GRANTS
Since 1990, Wal-Mart has been awarding
environmental grants to schools to support local
environmental education projects.
Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB provide
grants to local schools to support environmental
projects and education in communities where stores
are located. Schools can use the funds to support
environmental education, recycling projects, and
planting trees. On Earth Day, associates nationwide
announce the names of local schools receiving
an environmental grant earmarked for a project
that will benefit their community.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
As the leading provider of comprehensive waste and environmental services in North America, Waste Management is committed to being a good steward of the environment and to making communities safer, cleaner and better places to live and work. One of the ways that they are doing this is through giving to Environmental Education. They feel that the key to ensuring the preservation of the environment is to teach children about the importance of protecting it and acting in an environmentally responsible manner. To this end, Waste Management prefers to support environmental education programs targeted at middle and high school students. This includes environmental and science related projects, science fairs, Earth Day projects and others.
