THE ARTHUR VINING DAVIS FOUNDATIONS

The Board of Trustees' current practice is to award grants primarily in the areas of private higher education, secondary education, graduate theological education, health care and public television. In secondary education, the focus is on innovative professional development programs that strengthen teachers and their teaching in grades 9-12.

Priority is given to projects in the early stage that address problems on a national level, and those that involve sustained partnerships between colleges and school districts. Proposals should strive to develop solutions with potential for wide application or replication by others.

Funds: Range from $100,000 to $150,000 each

Application Deadline: Proposals are accepted year-round.

Contact: Dr. Jonathan T. Howe, Executive Director, The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, 225 Walter Street, Suite 1510, Jacksonville, FL 32202-5185 (904) 359-0670

S.H. COWELL FOUNDATION

The majority of Cowell grants support the induction and in-service professional development of teachers. Our purpose is to help schools develop effective, coherent and responsive instructional programs. It is vital that the plan for the grant project provide sufficient time and expert support for teachers to master new teaching and assessment methods, subject knowledge and ways of working together.

We also fund projects that support students' learning by strengthening connections among schools, families and other agencies in the community, and projects that link classroom lessons to carefully aligned and structured programs beyond the school. It's not unusual for projects to combine two or even all of these elements.

In general, we do not fund direct services to students, such as tutoring or technological interventions; instead, our focus is on the quality of interactions between students and their teachers.

The S.H. Cowell Foundation only funds communities in northern and Central California.

The foundation requests that prospective applicants call and speak with a program officer about their grant idea before writing a proposal. The foundation will invite letters of inquiry and full proposals from those grant seekers whose projects best align with the foundation's interests and initiatives.

Funds: range between $1,000 and $300,000 (based on funding needs and other sources of support)

Application Deadline: accepts calls from grant seekers year-round

Contact: The S.H. Cowell Foundation, 120 Montgomery Street, Suite 2570, San Francisco, CA 94104; (415) 397-0285
