THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS LIBRARIES (AASL)

The AASL supports an array of grant progams that recognize, support and advance public school libraries and media centers. Go to www.ala.org/aasl/awards to download a brochure and application.

Application Deadline: February 1st for most grants, unless otherwise stated.

THE H.W. WILSON LIBRARY STAFF DEVELOPMENT GRANT

An annual award consisting of $3,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation given to a library organization whose application demonstrates greatest merit for a program of staff development designed to further the goals and objectives of the library organization.

Staff development is defined as:

"a program of learning activities that is developed by the library organization and develops the on-the-job staff capability and improves the abilities of personnel to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the library organization."

A library organization is defined as:

  • individual library
  • library system
  • group of cooperating libraries
  • state governmental agency
  • local, state, or regional association

Funds: $3,500

LAURA BUSH FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN LIBRARIES

The goal of the Laura Bush Foundation is to provide books to the school libraries and students that most need them. The Laura Bush Foundation will make grants of amounts up to $6,000 to school libraries; funds are to be used to update, extend and diversify the book collections of those libraries. Funding preference is given to schools where 90% or mor of the students are eligible for free or reduced price meals. All Laura Bush Foundation grants are made to individual schools rather than to school districts, foundations, or other entities. Only one application per school is allowed.

Funds: Up to $6,000

THE LISA LIBRARIES

The Lisa Libraries donates new children's books and small libraries to organizations that work with children in poor and under served areas. Donations through the program have been made to support after school programs and day-care centers.

Funds: value of book donations

NEA Foundation Books Across America Awards

The NEA Foundation will make $1,000 awards to public schools servicng economically disadvantaged students to purchase books for school libraries. The NEA Foundation makes these awards in collaboration with the National Education Association.

Applicants must meet all of the criteria listed below.

  • The applicant must be a practicing preK-12 school librarian, teacher, or educaiton support professionanl in a U.S. public school.
  • At least 70% of the students in the applicant's school must be eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch program.
  • The applicant must agree to serve as the contact person for the award and all related public relations activities.

Funds: $1,000
