Earth Day / Creek Week April 2005

In April 2005, Calvine High School students participated in Earth Day Creek Week activities by visiting Strawberry Creek nearby Calvine High School. Students performed water testing and cataloged varieties of local flora and fauna. Students added their results to a water quality data base on the Internet for camparison with other urban creeks around the United States. Students also reflected on the economics of land use decisions and the effect good citizenship has on watersheds in our local communities. For their efforts Calvine High School was awarded the Sacramento Urban Creek Steward Award for 2005. Look below for photos of students engaged in learning at Strawberry Creek.

Students are especially careful not to disturb possible nesting areas of animals living naturally in the area.
Students gain valuable insight and experience working together to scientifically analyze water in the watershed they use for their everyday water source.

Students eagerly participate in water quality testing as they know the water they test is the same that they use in their personal lives.
The importance of volunteering is to help our local community while learning about the environment. Calvine High School students have a rich history of helping out during community projects.

Watersheds in the Calvine High School community provide a valuable place for animals to live in a natural habitat. Students analyze this habitat to see how the effects of humans living nearby affect their environment. Local residents.

Students collaborating and working together give them the teamwork skills they will need in the job force in the upcoming years. Working well with others is a personality trait desired by all employers.
Students enjoy conducting analysis of the quality of the local environment. Most are taken aback by the beauty of fully blooming vernal pools in their local communities.

This continuing project is very meaningful for Calvine High School students. Outside of normal classroom boundaries, Calvine students are focused on their own learning and participation thus generating more positive academic results. Staff is on hand to work with students and to reinforce positive social and academic behaviors over this three day event. Students take pride in participating in the Strawberry Creek Environmental Classroom while larning about flood control, natural habitiats for native species, and protection of the watershed we all use for our clean water.
