Dear Elk Grove Unified Students, Parents and Families,

EGUSD Distance Learning will start in 2 days for secondary schools and in 6 days for elementary schools. Of our 5 Tips for distance learning, today, we want to emphasize Tip 4: Getting familiar with the device and platform your student will be using. You can find all five tips again in the 5 Tips short video online. And for your reference, the letter sent on April 9th focused on Tips 1 and 2 and in the letter sent on April 13th concentrated on Tip 3.

To get more familiar with the device and platform your student will be using during distance learning, please review our Frequently Asked Questions web page. Be sure to look at this FAQ: “What is Google Classroom and how does Google Classroom work?”

With distance learning, students and their families will be setting their own bell schedule throughout the day. Here are two scenarios for what an elementary aged student will do daily compared to a middle or high school student:

Elementary Student (1st-6th) Secondary Student (7th-12th)
  • Each family will create their own daily routine or “Bell Schedule”.
  • Students will check in once per day any time before noon.
  • Anytime before noon (12:00 p.m.) every weekday, the student logs in to the EGUSD ClassLink Portal; opens Google Classroom and checks-in one time using a Google Form for attendance. (Note: Distance learning allows for greater flexibility for families juggling multiple schedules.)
  • Students will check-in once per day per course and may do so for all courses any time before noon.
  • Every weekday, for every scheduled course, the student logs in to the EGUSD ClassLink Portal; opens Google Classroom and checks-in using a Google Form for attendance. (Note: Unlike being on a campus, a student may check-in to all of the scheduled courses for the day in the same sitting without having to wait for a “bell” to go to the next course. Distance learning allows for greater flexibility for families juggling multiple schedules.)
  • Student then checks and reads the teacher’s post(s) and checks for assignments.
  • Student then checks and reads the teacher’s post(s) and checks for assignments.
  • Student works on assignment(s), which may include watching a pre-recorded video, reviewing a presentation, answering a quiz or doing self-guided practice from a workbook or other online tool. Students need to pay attention to assignment due dates. (Note: Student work will often be self-paced throughout the week and completed on the computer. If a project is to be completed from physical items, written out on a piece of paper or demonstrates solving a math problem, a student may take a photo of it and submit it to the teacher in Google Classroom.)
