April 23, 2021

Dear EGUSD Students, Parents and Staff,

With many things happening within our District, community and the nation, this update will focus on EGUSD and the progress we are making toward graduations, summer learning programs and the planning process for the ‘21-22 school year. We also want to share that we lost a valued, beloved and cherished educator this week who is also one of our namesakes. This week, we pay tribute to Mrs. Irene B. West and noted below are the stories shared about her amazing life and leadership in education. Also, we have been monitoring several national news stories and are providing any needed counseling support for our students and staff whether they are attending school through distance learning or in-person and for resources open to the public, we have added those resources below.

Remembering a Legacy – Mrs. Irene B. West

“The news of Mrs. West’s passing struck many hearts including mine and we all felt that sadness when someone we love and respect so much departs. Her bright soul lead the way for hundreds of educators throughout Elk Grove Unified and her impact on our youth has been tremendous. Her generosity, passion for learning and support of teachers astounded many. She knew how important it was to meet each student where they were and always went out of her way to do the little things that made learning fun. Now that the path she paved is well established, I hope to see her legacy continue in the talent we have now, for those entering the teaching profession and for our students who want to join our ranks.” – Christopher R. Hoffman, Superintendent.

The District has determined that the in-person indoor preference at the Golden 1 Center is not a viable option. This means we will be preparing for an outdoor venue for each ceremony using EGUSD sites and facilities. We have created a virtual option for those who might feel uncomfortable attending a live ceremony so that they too can also watch and participate in the live ceremonies.

Senior graduation dates are the week of May 24-28, 2021. Final graduation celebration details will be shared by the end of April.

Summer Learning Programs June 7 – July 23, 2021

The District is in the process of planning and recruiting teachers for our K-12 Summer Learning Programs. Plans for in-person programs include a focus on social emotional learning, enrichment and learning recovery.  Please keep an eye out for details and enrollment information coming from school sites soon.

‘21-22 School Year Planning

Surveys: Thank you goes out to the EGUSD staff who responded to the ‘21-22 learning model survey. That information will be synthesized and provided in a report out to staff. Also many thanks to the over 200 parents who attended one of four facilitated listening sessions as part of the planning process for the next school year. The input provided to District staff was captured in three categories: Immediate Needs, Summer Learning and Next Year. The feedback from all sessions will be synthesized and sent back out to the parents who participated including responses to questions that came up as well.

Please continue to stay vigilant about face mask wearing in public settings, avoiding large gatherings, maintaining hand hygiene and getting vaccinated. If you are uncertain about vaccinations or would like more information, Kaiser Permanente will be providing informational sessions you may participate in. In an effort to boost vaccine confidence in the community, Kaiser Permanente is offering monthly information sessions on COVID-19 vaccines. Sessions will also be offered in Spanish beginning late May. These sessions are open to all and you do not need to be a member. Also, no registration is required, just click on the link in the flyer or copy the QR code to join the session.
