December 10, 2021

Dear Elk Grove Unified Students, Parents and Families,

Our students and staff are only two weeks away from a well-deserved winter break. We continue to work through the pandemic conditions while focusing on teaching and learning. We are seeing an increase in families choosing to get vaccinated at our vaccination clinics. Nearly 600 people were vaccinated against COVID-19 at our clinic last Sunday and just yesterday, we vaccinated another 240 people with 70 percent being in the 5-11 age group. What we are learning from Sacramento County Public Health is that upon return to school this fall, pediatric COVID-19 hospitalizations were approximately 3.5-4.5 times lower in California than they were. Also, California schools largely remained open this school year and California accounted for less than 0.5% of school closures despite accounting for 12% of all students in the U.S. According to the CDC, schools without mask requirements were 3.5 times more likely to have COVID-19 outbreaks compared to schools that started the year with mask requirements.

As we move forward and into a new year, stay tuned for the Superintendent’s Message next week where he will share highlights of what lies ahead for EGUSD.

New Resolution Adopted for Board Meetings (AB 361) and Public Comment Update

Recently, the Board took action to adopt AB 361 that authorizes the use of remote teleconferencing provisions and the Board’s policy regarding in-person public comment has been updated. To review these changes, please visit the December 14th Board Meeting web page.

Trustee (Board Member) Area Redistricting Information
Every ten years, after the U.S. Census data is released, school districts are required to evaluate whether their current trustee areas have approximately equal populations using the new census data. With the recent 2020 Census data release, EGUSD has begun the process of evaluating each of its trustee (Board member) areas for population balance, referred to as redistricting.

EGUSD is working with professional demographers to draft and revise maps for consideration by the public and the Board. Information regarding the redistricting process and proposed revised maps, which will ensure appropriate population balance, can be found by visiting the following Trustee (Board Member) Election System website. On December 14, 2021, the draft trustee area (Board member) maps will be presented to the Board at the regular scheduled Board meeting.  Following the presentation, the Board will provide feedback and receive community input on the draft trustee (Board member) area maps.

Social Media Threats Are Not a Joke (Blog from Internet Safety/Digital Citizenship)
For many years, schools have made deliberate efforts to teach students about their digital footprints and the ramifications of posting inappropriate things online, and yet there continues to be an increase in students nationwide using popular social media platforms to make threats against other students and their schools – opening themselves up to possible criminal charges and civil liability. Read more…

Social Media Threats Can Be Met with Serious Consequences
In Elk Grove Unified, we take threats to do harm against our school, students and staff very seriously. We do not consider any such threat to be a prank. We ask parents to speak to their students about the gravity of posting a threat or even spreading it. Please review the Sacramento Sheriff’s press release whereby after investigating recent threats, two students were identified and cited for having been originators of a social media threat made against Laguna Creek High School.

New Crossing Guard Company
On Tuesday, December 7, a new crossing guard company, Cross Safe, began servicing 8 of 11 contracted EGUSD locations. Cross Safe is in the process of bringing on additional staff for Laguna Creek HS and Franklin HS shortly. EGUSD Security and Security staff are working alongside the new guards in getting them acclimated in their new assignments.

The Elk Grove Unified School District is building a brighter future, one student at a time and our District is continuing to grow. Very soon we will announce our phase-in of Universal Transitional Kindergarten stating that starting in the 2022/2023 school year, we will be able to begin serving all three and four-year-old children. There are many new opportunities for students, parents and the community, so stay tuned!

Large-Scale Events and Dances
We are very pleased to be able to offer outdoor large-scale events and outdoor dance opportunities.

EGUSD has collaboratively, with site administration, staff and parents, developed an event  planning, review and approval process that will enable schools to offer (outdoor) large-scale events including dances. Dances will take place in optimal outdoor campus locations excluding football fields and tennis courts. Each school develops unique plans based upon the size of the dance, and unique characteristics of their campus. Key elements of the plan include event details, assurances health and safety guidelines are adhered to, and staffing numbers and deployment. There will be controlled access to indoor spaces for restroom access, coat check, snacks/water, etc. Sites are now in the process of planning these types of opportunities. We have some schools planning dances to take place as early as this month, with others planning for the second semester. All of this is contingent upon continuing positive health statistics and adhering to CA Dept of Public Health guidelines. For information specific to a particular school, contact the school’s office for event details and/or volunteering opportunities.

Parent/Community Volunteering Opportunities at Schools Are Now Available
We are very excited to once again offer volunteering opportunities at our schools. EGUSD has established updated volunteer guidelines and a process for each school to be able to safely bring volunteers back to our campuses. Volunteers shall adhere to applicable and mandatory Public Health Guidance, including guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health and the County Public Health Department. In addition, volunteers must comply with EGUSD’s health and safety policies, including face mask requirements and any current physical distancing requirements. All volunteers will need to adhere to vaccination or testing requirements.

All volunteers must be fingerprinted. Fingerprinting has a five-year renewal requirement. Anyone who has been fingerprinted within the past five years will not need to be fingerprinted. Individuals who need to fingerprint will be contacted by the Fingerprinting office to schedule a fingerprinting appointment after the Volunteer Registration form is completed. Cleared volunteers can check with the site(s) they are volunteering with to confirm when their fingerprints will expire and will receive notice from the District on how to renew fingerprinting clearance.

Additional details will be sent from schools.

As you may have heard already, the CDC approved the emergency authorization of the Pfizer vaccine for children between the ages of 5 and 11. On Friday, December 10, we will host a COVID vaccination clinic for all who are eligible ages 5+ (see the upcoming vaccine clinic information below and walk-ins are welcome). If you would like to have your child vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible, please check with your local health care provider or local pharmacy to see if they already have the appropriate vaccine.

We remain hopeful that our health and safety protocols as well as the availability of vaccines will keep infection rates relatively low and we are closely monitoring information related to the Omicron variant. Currently, we have a 7.98 case rate per 100,000 compared to 8.5 countywide.
