June 11, 2021

Hello Elk Grove Unified Students, Families and Staff,

Today’s update covers a flurry of activity taking place across the District. We have summer learning, preparations for the new school year, community vaccine clinics, Kindergarten enrollment and professional development all happening at once. One exciting piece of news to share is that we have approximately 100 students participating in our work experience program with paid internships. Many of these students will be working alongside certificated staff in our summer learning program and hopefully, the experience will spur them into becoming future educational leaders. Also included are references to additional summer enrichment resources and more job opportunities. Be sure to read to the end to watch a heartwarming story about a student whose wish was granted thanks to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Summer Learning

Whether you’re currently on break or participating in expanded learning, we hope your summer is off to a great start! For those of you who have completed the online enrollment for Waggle and iRead, the program is scheduled to run June 14 – Aug. 14. The program will be accessible via student portals beginning Monday, June 14. For more details, please view the Summer Learning Program Summary document. We have nearly three times the number of students in our Summer Learning program this year with fun and engaging in-person camps, enrichment courses and continued learning.

Visit our Summer School webpage for more resources and summer learning opportunities.

Summer Opportunities for Students in Grades 5 – 8

Square Root Academy is offering two free summer learning opportunities, Appify and Open Source, for students in grades 5 – 8. Appify is a 6-week (June 28 – Aug. 5) summer experience teaching scholars how to leverage design and technology to develop solutions. Open Source is a virtual experience (classes offered June 28 – Aug. 26 on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays, 10 – 11:30 a.m.) where students explore a variety of STEAM topics. Scholars will enjoy a series of hands-on experiences and an introduction to topics including life science and ecology, cryptography and robotics.

By-Trustee Area Election System

On May 4, 2021, the Board adopted Resolution No. 67, 2020-21 reaffirming its intent to transition to a by-trustee area election system using 2010 Census data and making applicable modifications to the Trustee Areas when the delayed 2020 Census data is released. Part of this multifaceted election system transition includes the public posting and review of draft Trustee Area maps as they are prepared and presented. The Board will hold the third of four required hearings on June 15, 2021 to review proposed maps. The link below has been created for members of the public to review the draft maps as they are developed and to receive other pertinent information.

Visit the Trustee Election System webpage for more information.

Kindergarten Enrollment

Elk Grove Unified is actively looking for students who are “5 and ready” to enroll in kindergarten. The District is running ads and a social media campaign to get kids enrolled.
