Dear Elk Grove Unified Students, Parents and Families,
This week’s District update provides you with a brief overview of the District’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic since the school closures in March. The threat of a highly contagious virus continues to be a concern for our community and now doubly troubling is the financial impact of the state’s emergency response to the COVID-19 crisis. Yesterday, the California Department of Finance announced a projected $54 billion deficit with a potential $18 billion negative impact for K-14 schools. News of the state’s dire financial situation will have implications for Elk Grove Unified. In preparation for any reductions in funding, and in tandem with conducting distance learning, preparing for virtual graduations and planning for summer school, the District is also preparing its budget. The next critical date Elk Grove Unified leaders anxiously await is the announcement of the Governors’ May Revise of the state’s budget, which is scheduled to be released next Thursday, May 14th. Once the District receives its funding information from the Governor’s May Revise, a final budget will be prepared and presented to the Board for approval.
