Attendance
top |
Students are expected to attend school regularly. Academic success and achievement begin with a commitment to being punctual and prepared for the rigors of school. Maintaining this high standard will positively affect a student’s progress and grade as well as reinforce a strong work ethic for the future. Keep in mind that missing one class on the block schedule is equivalent to missing two classes on a traditional schedule. Therefore, attendance is extremely important. Regular attendance and punctuality are key elements in determining your success at Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School. Irregular attendance will negatively affect class progress and grades. Parents/guardians, please feel free to call and check your student(s) attendance at any time. |

Dress Code
top |
Parents or guardians have the primary responsibility for appropriate standards of dress and grooming. However, as an educational entity, the Secondary Division of the Elk Grove Unified School District believes it has the responsibility to establish and maintain appropriate standards of dress and grooming that support a positive, wholesome and safe learning and teaching environment. The purpose of a dress and grooming code is to facilitate education, not to inhibit any person’s taste in attire or appearance. Students should be clean and neatly dressed in a manner that will be decent, not hazardous to the health and safety of the students, and not disruptive or distracting from the educational program of the school. |
1. |
Clothing, jewelry and body markings must be free of writing, pictures or any insignia which appear to be crude, vulgar, profane, sexually suggestive, or which advocate racial, ethnic, or religious prejudice, or use of drugs or alcohol, or gangs. Belts or belt buckles with initials, bandanas, drawings, and/or offensive personalized writing on any clothing or backpack is prohibited. Belts must be fastened appropriately at the waist with a minimum of overlap. |
2. |
Shoes must be worn at all times. Sandals are discouraged for safety reasons and flip flops are not allowed. Bedroom slippers are not permitted. |
3. |
No sagging pants are permitted. Pants and bib overalls are to be properly fastened. |
4. |
The wearing of billed hats free of commercial or athletic logos, jackets with hoods, Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School spirit wear, caps or hoods will be permitted outside only. Students will not be permitted to wear hair rollers, shower caps, hair rags, hairnets or other such grooming items to school. |
5. |
Clothing and accessories that are disruptive to the learning environment will not be permitted. Pajamas are not acceptable attire at school. |
6. |
Clothes shall sufficiently conceal undergarments at all times. See-through or fishnet fabrics, halter tops, off the shoulder or low cut tops, spaghetti straps, short/crop tops, muscle shirts, bare midriff and skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh are prohibited. |
7. |
Pocket chains used to secure wallets are not allowed. |
8. |
Any clothing or combination of clothing and/or accessories deemed or identified as gang apparel by the local law enforcement gang task force will be not permitted. |
|
| Coaches and teachers of technical and lab classes may impose specific dress requirements to accommodate the special needs or safety concerns of certain sports and/or activities. Consequences will be determined by severity of the offense. |
Emergency Messages
top |
Due to the large size of our school and the need to control classroom interruptions, messages cannot be delivered to students except in cases of extreme emergencies (i.e. illness or death of an immediate family member). Make sure to leave phone number for the student to call you. Please plan your families after school activities and schedule prior to school. |
Extended Learning Policy (Homework)
top |
Philosophy |
| It is the belief of Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School that significant educational gains can be made by students through well-defined extended learning experiences directed by teachers and supported by parents. Extended learning is defined as school related and assigned work completed beyond the regular school day. The teacher, as the educational professional, directs the classroom; thus the school and classroom setting is the primary and most effective teaching and learning environment. Extended learning supplements and complements the teacher’s instruction. |
| Student Responsibilities |
• Students are accountable for extended learning assigned.
•
Students not understanding extended learning should, in a timely way, initiate contact with the teacher or other knowledgeable person to clarify the expectations for extended learning assignments. |
| Absences |
| Students who miss schoolwork because of an excused absence shall, upon a timely request, be given the opportunity to complete all assignments and tests that can be reasonably provided, for full credit. As determined by the teacher, the assignments and tests can be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to the assignments and tests missed during the absence. The school staff determines what are reasonable deadlines for accomplishing such make up work. |

This is due to your child having either overdue books or having book fines due (book damage) to the library. Once any and all charges have been cleared, delayed report card(s)/ progress report(s) will be issued. |
| Lost & Found |
The Lost and Found is located in the Student Services Building. Students are urged to secure their books and personal items at all times to avoid the possibility of loss or theft and are encouraged not to bring valuable possessions or large sums of money to school. |

Tardies
top |
Tardy to Class: All 7th and 8th graders are expected to be in class on time. This means students must be sitting at their desk and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. Students who are tardy to class will be subject to a consequence by the teacher and/or school administration. Students who arrive to school without a note or phone call from parent/guardian will be given a Truant pass. The student will need to bring a note the following day to clear the truant.
