The acronym "Mesa" stands for Math, Engineering, & Science Achievement. This club has existed at Kerr for the past nine years. It is part of a statewide organization connected to both the University of Califrornia and California State University systems. There is currently a MESA club at Elk Grove High School as well. The purpose of MESA is to provide students interested in atending college with enrichment lessons, contests, and field trips in a course of study connected to Math and/or the Sciences. Weekly meetings are held during lunch time and enrichment activities are conducted during class time. There are three annual contests held at Cal State Sacramento. A Math competition is held in January with two Science competitions held in the late Spring. There are also two or three Saturday field trips to science museums and exhibits. MESA students complete tracking documents each year they participate in the program. They sole purpose of these forms is to allow colleges to track student progress until High School graduation. Previous MESA students who have continued in the High School program and maintained a high level of accomplishment have been awarded college scholarships. ---Egg Drop (an egg must be protected, within size limits, fom damage in a drop from a building) ---Craft Stick Bridge (bridges are constructed from popsicle sticks and must support the greatest weight possible over a span) ---Soda Straw Towers (attempting to build the tallest self-supporting towers from a specific number of straws) ---Sail Cars (like a sailboard on wheels, judged by the distance travelled and accurate tracking) ---Mousetrap Cars (cars powered by mousetraps judged by the distance travelled and accurate tracking) ---Math Tests (Pre-Algebra, Algebra One, and College Prep Geometry tests administered to students enrolled in these levels of courses at Kerr Middle School) |
