Kids Cooking Week recognized at EGUSD February 5, 2008Elementary school students in the Elk Grove Unified School District will cook up some fun during Kids Cooking Week February 4-8 and March 24-28. The district’s Food and Nutrition Services Department will be providing a “grocery bag” full of the necessary ingredients and supplies to make broccoli salad in the classroom for teachers at 39 elementary schools. “By having students make the broccoli salad, we are encouraging them to eat more vegetables in a way that they may not have tried before,” said Delois Davis-McDuffie, director of Food and Nutrition Services. Cooking in the classroom is an excellent way to present nutrition education. It encourages students to become more involved in healthy food preparation, making them more likely to taste new and healthful foods. Classroom cooking projects also support and encourage the family meal. Teachers can take the lesson a step further by linking the food experience to the core curriculum in areas such as social studies, math, science, and language arts. Children enjoy working in the kitchen and often are more willing to eat foods they helped prepare. Elk Grove Unified’s Food and Nutrition Services Department is sponsoring this event with donations from local vendors and funding support through the California Department of Public Health’s Network for a Healthy California.
