Our MissionOur philosophy here at Sheldon High School is that dance is a means to Explore, discover, and share in the celebration of our diversity. It Provides us with an outlet for self expression and a means to communicate our feelings and dreams in a non verbal way. The process will be long, hard, and intense, BUT worth every bit of the aches and pains.
Company ProfileWhat is Universal Rhythm? : Universal Rhythm had it's inaugural season as a dance club in 1997-1998, the year Smedberg/Sheldon opened as a 7-12 Performing Arts emphasis comprehensive high school. The first year it was under the directorship of Becky Hobgood and opened to 7th, 9th, and 10th grades and started as a club that met two days a week as Sheldon and Smedburg's second dance educator. The second year Debi Roberts came on board and "Universal Rhythm" became an audition only dance company with 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students that audition in front of a board, which consisted of experienced in high school dance, judging panel. The candidates would be required to take a Composition and Performance class during 3rd period and a technique class that would alternate days in the 3rd period time slot. That same year "No Limit Rhythm" dance club was initiated at the Smedberg Middle School students. The third year the 3rd full time dance educator was hired, and an amazing dance empire had begun. We are now in the 12th year and the dance program and company have continued to grow and flourish. Universal Rhythm in its 12 years has been honored as being chosen to showcase at the National High School Dance Festival in Florida in 2002 and at the California High School Dance Festival at CSU Long Beach. For two consecutive years Universal Rhythm we continue to be honored with the opportunity to participate in many community events by performing. What is it that we do? : Universal Rhythm provides our student dancers a means to express the connection between dance and the human race. "DANCE" our art's discipline is a means of expression and communication. Its means is to pass through cultural boundaries and provide the opportunity to discover through movement, an increased sense of self discipline, team work, and skills that will stay with each dancers throughout their lives.
