Dear Joseph Sims Students and Families,

My name is Shelly Hughes and I am extremely pleased to be appointed principal of Joseph Sims Elementary School by the Elk Grove Board of Education.

I come to Joseph Sims Elementary with several years experience as a site administrator at Elk Grove Elementary, Robert J. Fite Elementary, and Arthur Butler Elementary Schools all within the Elk Grove Unified School District.  Prior to my service as a site administrator, I served as a classroom teacher for over ten years at various sites throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District.

On a personal note, I have a long family history in Elk Grove as my father’s family homesteaded in the Elk Grove/Florin region in 1850.  Since that time, three generations have called Elk Grove our home, where we have raised our families and attended Elk Grove schools. My husband and I have lived in the Laguna region since 1997 and are raising two daughters who are very active in the local schools and community events. We consider ourselves blessed to live in an area so rich in diversity, culture, and within a school district that values high standards by providing rich learning experiences for all students. 

My passion is to ensure all students achieve their highest potential.  For children to reach their greatest potential and become life long learners, it takes a partnership of committed administrators, teachers, parents, support staff and students. It is apparent that this is a shared belief at Joseph Sims Elementary School.

I wish to express my appreciation to our Governing Board for placing their confidence in me by appointing me to assume leadership of such an outstanding school.  I will begin my service at Joseph Sims on Monday, September 15, 2008, and look forward to the opportunity to meet and begin my relationship with the students, staff, and families of the Joseph Sims Elementary School community.  I can be reached via email at shughes@egusd.net or call me at (916) 683-7445.
